LoveYourself Observes World AIDS Day With Community Events

Image
By Kris Tangco Today is World AIDS Day, and LoveYourself joins the global community in its observance by hosting three events: an empowering pageant, an HIV testing day and an HIV awareness campaign with media trailblazer Rappler. World AIDS Day is  designated on the first day of December, and has been commemorated since 1988 to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by HIV infection, as well as to remember those who have died of the disease.   The Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS , known more commonly as UNAIDS , reports that at the end of 2014, 36.9 million people globally were living with HIV, with 2 million new infections in the said year. Also from 2000 until 2014, 25.3 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses, while 15.8 million people have access to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy as of June 2015.  Philippines: AIDS epidemic in-the-making While the number of infections worldwide has dropped from 3.1 million in 2000 to 2 million in 2014, a 35% de...

LoveYourself Volunteer Spotlight: Alexis Sy, Paying It Forward

Image
Despite his financial struggles, the unassuming scholar and LoveYourself top counselor keeps the cycle of kindness going, one compassionate act at a time. "I like helping out people, especially when I see them happy or when I see my efforts bear fruit. It gives me fulfillment. And because there were people who helped me in the past when I needed it, I somehow want to give back."  By Jean Natividad  Not considering its tragic ending, the 2000 American drama flick Pay It Forward , based on the novel of the same name by Catherine Ryan Hyde, is a delight for its stellar performances and heartwarming theme. In it, a young visionary named Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) creates a networking plan of paying favors forward to spread kindness in a rather organized fashion and, ultimately (and excuse the cliché), change the world.  While good deeds seem harder to come by these days and the idea of making a change too daft for society's cynics, it certainly wouldn't hurt to h...

Trick or Treat: The No-Scare Guide to Knowing If It's HIV

Image
By: Shey Homol It’s Halloween—the fright-fest movies are playing nonstop on HBO and the kids went all out again in their nastiest, goriest, or Disney-princess-inspired costumes. And yet what really scares you are not those things that go bump in the night… what’s been freaking you out are the sore bumps in your genitalia. You immediately think it’s HIV. You reckon you got it from sharing utensils with a friend who’s living with HIV. So even before Freddy Krueger could utter “nightmare,” you went ahead and bought a bagful of over-the-counter antibiotics that you’re certain would cure you. If you’ve been in this situation or a similar circumstance, don’t worry, you’re not the only one who has been misinformed. LoveYourself has always received queries online and even from walk-in clients about their supposed symptoms of HIV. And before, HEAVENS FORBID, you experience any nasty side effect from self-medication, let this version of “Trick or Treat” inform you more on HIV. “I’ve had multiple...
