Volunteer Spotlight: Dalton Claudio and Frenzy Importado, Honing the HIV Testing Experience

Image
The volunteer duo believes the fear of HIV testing is best banished with an uplifting counseling experience, so they set out to create a better process for LoveYourself’s flagship testing event. By Michael Jamias Two years ago, when Dalton Claudio found out the guy he was dating was cheating on him, he did not seek revenge. Instead, he sought out the nearest HIV testing center he could trust in Manila. “I found out about LoveYourself Platinum . That time, I was so scared of the result,” the 26-year-old IT consultant confesses, referring to the by-appointment and confidential HIV testing service provided by the non-profit organization LoveYourself. Afraid that he had been infected with HIV and hurt by his partner’s betrayal, Dalton hesitantly stepped into a room where volunteer LoveYourself counselor Manuel greeted him with a smile. Dalton remembers the counseling conversation fondly. Manuel not only dispelled Dalton’s misconceptions surrounding HIV (no, it cannot be transmitted mer...

The LoveYourself Testing Experience

Image
By Dun King Admittedly, getting tested for HIV is not one of the easiest things you’ll ever do in your life - in fact, it can be one of the most unnerving experiences you’ll ever have to go through.  There are a myriad of reasons why you are getting tested - it may be a follow-up test to your previous result several months ago, or a  requirement for getting recruited overseas, or you just simply decided to take the plunge and get yourself tested for the first time. Regardless of the reason, it’s difficult to really get the hang of it - whether it’s your first or fifth time getting tested. In any case, getting tested is the only definitive way to know whether you will turn out “reactive” or “nonreactive”. The Loveyourself Testing Experience At Loveyourself, we know and understand the importance of getting tested.  By getting tested, we become aware of our HIV status and carry out informed and responsible decisions based on these results. For those who turn out to be reacti...

Image
By: Carlos Diego A. Rozul Everyone has talked about a particular status in his or her life, be it their relationship status, their financial status, and heck people talk about their problems on their Facebook status all the time! But one thing that’s rarely talked about is one’s HIV status. Despite its relevance today it is still greatly stigmatized and has been thought of as taboo by many. This monthly column aims to help facilitate discussion on issues surrounding HIV testing and living with HIV. LoveYourself has started to embark on a great change, adapting a quicker and more efficient way of testing for HIV in its mass testing events - Community Based Screening (CBS).   It was first used in the May 2016 Incognito testing which tested 300 clients, so far the most successful turnout for any LoveYourself mass testing event. The advances in the time required to obtain results with high levels of accuracy have allowed LoveYourself to offer its Incognito event last May 2016 and the u...
